CREASE PERIODICAL I
Editorial / Layout / Production
When I was recovering for almost 9 months from my arm being rebuilt, I decided it was a good time to start a project I had on my mind.
Crease is an independent magazine containing images and words that are based around the culture of hockey, something which has been an obsession of mine on and off for the last 25-ish years. I started this because, to my knowledge, there is nothing like it. In my opinion, most sports media is a little dry and outdated so I took what was a foundation laid by skateboard magazines (another obsession) over the years and applied it to hockey. I gathered all the content, designed the layout, and learned a ton about the beautiful and expensive world of print production.
Although it might seem silly to start a print magazine in our current culture, the idea was received far better than I could have imagined. The magazine is sold at retailers worldwide, including Barnes & Noble, Chapters/Indigo, MOMA PS1 and McNally-Jackson.
Tangible Coverage
Sports fans everywhere are all consuming every tidbit of information they'll ever need on their phones. It's very convenient and most media outlets have great products but I wanted to take the backroads and provide a slower experience.
To me, hockey is an incredibly aesthetically pleasing sport, so I wanted to make something that illustrates this on something you can touch and feel. The movement, uniforms, and intensity of the game make for a great visual experience on paper. Although I appreciate the visuals most, I ended up finding interesting stories that needed a place to live other than a blog article within the depths of the internet. So what started out as sort of an artsy "bookazine", ended up becoming a full fledged publication. I used high quality paper, switching between glossy and matte pages, and created something a true fan of the game will want to hold onto.
The first issue was a hit, I sold all copies and get countless requests to reprint it.
Other Outlets
Knowing that I'd need to sell direct, I created a simple shopping experience using Shopify to bill and ship the product to my consumers. Along with the magazine, I created a limited Risograph print poster featuring The Great One with a tongue-in-cheek to a defunct stick brand that he endorsed for years.
